How To Update Your Living Room On A Budget In 5 Easy Steps

We’ve all been spending a lot of time at home, staring at our walls. Now winter is here and it doesn’t look like the situation will improve anytime soon. Rather, we’ll be spending much more time at home during the cold months. So today I want to share 5 easy ways to improve your living space without spending tons of money. Let´s get started!

Step 1: Paint an Accent Wall

Paint is one of the easiest and budget-friendly ways to change the entire feeling of a space. You’ll have to dig some old clothes out of the closet and invest some time but it is by far the fastest and cheapest way to change a room. If you have more time on your hands and find painting soothing go ahead and paint the entire room – it will change how you feel about your room! If you are able to spend a little more, you can wallpaper an accent wall with a wall mural (go check out Rebel Walls – their wall murals are stunning, easy to install and really great value for money).

Step 2: Add new Throw Pillow Covers

Exchanging your throw pillows is a great way to carry a new accent color throughout a room and create a new atmosphere. If you already have throw pillows you already have suitable inlets and can look for new pillow covers in the same shape. There are loads of great shops online that offer a huge selection of throw pillows – just head over to Etsy and start a search for whatever color pillows you are looking for! If you want to keep costs down, then h&m home is a great choice for on-trend, affordable pillow covers.

Step 3: Update your Art

Putting up a new piece of art instantly changes the atmosphere. There are loads of great sites that offer prints of contemporary art pieces. I love the art selection on minted and use this site frequently for client projects. Other great sites include Junique, Desenio and Artfully Walls.  You can choose the size you need, the medium you wish to have the art printed on and even the type of frame, should you require one. In this room I went for a gallery wall in different shades of yellow, black and grey – all with the same frame and all with the same matting in order to make it calm and not too dominating.

Step 4: Exchange a Lampshade

Lampshades can age – after all they are made of fabric. But the shape or color your lampshade also has an influence on the feeling of your room. It can change the color of the light in the space, making it feel either warmer or cooler. Switching out a lampshade for a shade of a different color, pattern or texture or shape is an easy fix when you are on a budget. You can get a good selection of lampshades at a furniture store near you – even Ikea has a some good choices. If you want to get something a bit more custom take a look at Etsy. I particularly like Vivid Shades Studio – they have really unusual lamp shades, if you feel like doing something dramatic.

Step 5: Add some Plants

Bringing nature in makes any room more inviting – the human eye finds the color green and the sight of plants incredibly soothing. Spend a bit more money and get something big like a fiddle leaf fig tree or go for a selection of smaller plants that are easier on the wallet. Check out your local nursery or go to a store like Ikea to grab a few plants. I personally love orchids as the bloom for months!

It just took 5 steps and the room is completely transformed. Of course you can apply this to any room in your home. Use what you have to decorate and create a new look.
